Description

Job Summary

The School of Kinesiology at the University of Michigan is pleased to announce searches for eight new tenure-track faculty members as part of a strategic hiring initiative targeting several emerging and multidisciplinary themes. As part of this initiative, we are searching for two faculty members to join our Sport Management program.

  • The Marketing and Data Analytics focused role seeks individuals with an interest in marketing and/or the impacts of legalized gaming or esports on sport and society, and who are committed to demonstrating their intellectual leadership driving their published research in the broad area of marketing analytics, including emerging areas of legalized gaming and esports.
  • The Sports Venues focused role seeks individuals interested in large-scale sports venues and their impacts on urban space and society, with particular focus on research that explores any or all of venue finance, management, marketing, operations, design, real estate development, and/or the economic, social, spatial, and health impacts of sport venues on neighborhoods, cities, and regions.

The successful candidates will have opportunities to join with colleagues in the Sport Management program and across campus advancing research that emphasizes the application of data analytics to the marketing of sport in the future, or complement and expand the activities of an established cluster of faculty working on topics related to large-scale sports venues and major sporting events. The School of Kinesiology is one of several campus partners making up an innovative and multidisciplinary curriculum focused on esports, which is set to launch in the 2022-23 academic year. In addition, a new massive open online course (MOOC) specialization in Sports Performance Analytics was recently launched by a group of faculty members from the Sport Management program and other U-M units. Successful candidates for Sport Venues position will have opportunities to collaborate on projects and initiatives, such as the joint Real Estate Development concentration administered by the Ross School of Business in partnership with the School of Kinesiology and Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning. In addition, university researchers will have access to high-performance computing and research storage services (including high-speed and archival storage).

The School of Kinesiology at the University of Michigan is the top Kinesiology program in the United States according to a recent review by the National Academy of Kinesiology.  The School is one of 19 independent academic units within the University of Michigan. The School is led by a Dean (Lori Ploutz-Snyder), has 32 tenure-track faculty, 8 clinical-track faculty, 23 part and full-time lecturers, and approximately 1000 undergraduate and graduate students. This past winter, our school moved into a newly renovated, state-of-the-art academic and research building (School of Kinesiology Building) which is located in the heart of the University of Michigan’s main campus. The $120,000,000 renovation project will expand the School of Kinesiology’s research, classroom, and office space to approximately 250,000 sq ft.  The School celebrates and is committed to the ideals of diversity, equity, and inclusion and believe that they enrich the learning environment and enhance the school’s innovation and overall productivity; review more detail about our diversity commitment here.
